Is "Medical Martial Law" the only way to prevent millions of deaths from COVID-19?

Attached image shows the projected deaths in the US by age group if COVID-19 affects a similar percentage as the Spanish Flu did.
The Spanish Flu was similar to COVID-19 in its ability to spread. There were 3 waves of infection with the Spanish Flu because there was widespread denial of the flu by city, state, and federal government. It killed over 600,000 Americans and infected about 28% of the residents of the US. Today that would be an economic disaster much greater than shutting down travel for 30 days.

The projection uses data from a Chinese Study of infected to derive the death percentage by age. Census data was used for the population numbers.

One of my dearest friends lost both her parents to the Spanish Flu. I know about suffering. And I don't ever want to be as sick as I was in 1957 and 1970. But really? Martial Law?

Well, 114,000 died in 1957 in the U S and 1.2 million Globally. That was the H1N1, (had that) and H2N2 in 1970 (had that) but since my oldest son has a compromised respiratory system, I am discouraging friends from visiting my home.

I think China is already quarantined.
For me it is a question of "would we ever regain our freedom" after martial law?
We haven't regained any of the freedom we lost after 911.
OTOH, martial law has happened locally in other disasters with little permanent effect.
We could ignore the evidence from other countries and assume it won't happen here, but the next election result will be very different if 1.7 million people have died. How many families will have lost a grandparent, aunt, or uncle and cast some blame on those running for re-election? You can be certain that the media will blame Trump regardless.

Thanks for that report, John. We'd love to hear more specifics when you have time to share them. I hope those actions will stop the spread there. I know that Italy has a greater proportion of older people in its population and I think that has increased the death rate there. Stay safe. 👍

I am in Verona Italy right now, and have been for 3 weeks. All schools closed, bars and restaurants must close by 6 pm. Most have simply shut down. If you go in a store, you must be one meter apart. They even have tape on the floors measured one meter to keep people separated. The streets are almost empty. Amazingly, the Italians are following the rules. We will see if this works. I think if they try this in America it will be chaos, but it may be the only answer. Matching the trajectory for increase in cases comparing the U.S. and Italy, the U.S. is only about 11 days behind Italy. But at least in Italy you can still by toilet paper!
