For the first two movies, who are your favorites?

For Dagny, I have to go with the Dagny in the first movie.

For Hank, I have to go with the Hank in the second movie.

I liked Dagny 1 and Hank 1. I liked the Rearden/Floyd Ferris scene the best of out of either movie so far. Though I know that others will disagree, Armin (Quark / Floyd Ferris) Shimerman filled the role of smug, pompous bureaucrat exactly how I would have portrayed him.

AS 2 casting was pathetically bad. AS1 casting was adequate. If the producers of the film had made arrangements to keep that cast in AS2 it would have been considerably better. We have accepted the flaws in AS1 because we love that it was FINALLY made and give the excuse that the producers had to get it done because they would otherwise have lost the rights. They made that decision and have taken responsibility.
However, that pressure to make AS2 to avoid losing the rights did not exist for AS2 (as far as I know.) A delay in AS2 to contract with the actors from AS1 should have been done.
At least then this discussion would not be needed.
AS2 was a great disappointment and I have little confidence that AS3 will be better. But it's too early to tell for sure. Basing anything on the AS3 trailer would be premature.

I would have chosen Diane Lane for Dagny.

This may not be popular, but I agree with you. Taylor Schilling was nearly perfect as Dagny, and she meshed well with Hank in AS1.

Although Esai Morales is a great actor, I give the nod to Jsu Garcia in the role of Francisco.

A differenct cast for AS3? Yikes, although the most recent trailer is a killer.

I'm trying to rustle up a viewing party on 9/13 for my in-laws. Friday night is out, as HS football is king in our neck of the woods. I was planning on taking the day off to spend time at the theatres, but I start a new job that week.

To the producers and marketers of the movie, I apologize. I'll make up for it in the same fashion that I supported AS1 & AS2: buy several copies of the videos, t-shirts & hats (man, I love the Danneskjold Repossessions hat & T-shirt).

I agree with you -- Dagny 1, Hank 2. Of course, the upcoming movie with Dagny 3 might make me rethink this, since Dagny 3 is the hottest. Normally, I prefer the 1st set of characters and would prefer to see that continuity in all subsequent movies. Having a different actor/actress each time only works if you are Dr. Who...

There is no sense in comparing long running tv series to a movie trilogy made in a few years.

That long list is mostly filled with:
        a) secondary characters
        b) different actors in remade series /sequels /spinoffs /pilots /movies
        c) actors having real medical problems preventing them from continuing

Not using the same actors (for major characters) in the AS trilogy is inexperienced production.
(In the defense of the producers, making AS the book into AS the movies is no easy task.)

+1: the depths that Ayn Rand went to developing the characters is mind boggling. Simply can't do that in a 90 minute movie covering 300-400 pages.

However, the producers did a marvelous job of illustrating the vile nature of Lillian Rearden (not so in AS2). That simple scene where she punctuates Hank's passion with, "Finished, dear?"

Hopefully a mini-series is in the plans for the future. I'm just thrilled that the novel was made into a movie, despite the hiccups.

Gotta remember that they got really lucky with AS1's casting, as a lot of the cast were on break from other jobs. Look at Taylor Schilling - she was starting a new series (as star) and timing of that cut her out of 2 and 3. I would have LOVED to see her come back in 3, but I also understand the logistical realities of availability, and the tremendous cost of paying her a retainer for 2 and 3, not knowing if they would even be made at that time.

EACH movie has it's stand-outs... From Dagny in 1, Hank and Lilian in 2... I can't wait to see who pops out in 3, tho I expect it will be, with Kris Polaha cast, the answer to the question...

            "Who is John Galt?" --grins--

Really? I liked Kim Rhodes' Lillian in part 2... I don't know if I would have liked her in part 1, or Rebecca Wisocky in part 2.

"For Hank, I have to go with the Hank in the second movie."
Hank seemed too arrogant and self-righteous in the 2nd movie. The looters should be that way. I see the looters as the people who look good, can sell reasons to take your stuff and tell you what to do, and the producers are the nerds who just get things done and are hardly aware. Hand in the 2nd movie didn't give off enough hard-working nerd vibe for me.

" the nerds who just get things done and are hardly aware." really? smart people are aware. if one is so self focused as to not understand what is going on around them-this is the caricature of inventors which I despise. Hank is aware at what is going on around him. So is Dagny. They choose to ignore it for some time for various reasons. There are three other heroes who are not only aware but acting on what is going on around them. That is the challenge. Does Galt have any use for the oblivious nerd in the Gulch just because they are productive? hmmm...interesting question. Does their skill overcome their obliviousness. This is something I wonder about Os all the time. I say no. Rand had little use for the oblivionators.

Do you think the Hank in the first movie gave off less of a vibe of being aware or focused on the looters?

I was okay with both actors. It was the second Dagny I didn 't really buy. I 'm a little worried that the third Dagny won 't be what I was hoping for. But the trailer looks good.

I thought Hank in the book gave the impression bordering on obliviousness to the looters, and the first Hand brought that out. It was one of my biggest problems with the book. These people were amazingly smart but missing some obvious things. I don't mind it, though, because it's an allegory, not nearly as implausible as the allegories in Star Trek.

It's a close call between Taylor Schilling and Samantha Mathis, but I go with Mathis for my preferred Dagney

It's also a close call between Beghe and Bowler for Hank, but I'm going to go with Beghe because, while Bowler better portrayed the successful businessman, Beghe gave more of the impression of a blue-collar self-made man.
