Real Life Gulcher in the Family

So...a distant cousin disappeared many years ago. This guy was very industrious. He owned several heavy manufacturing shops in the Los Angeles basin. Worked very hard for many years. I remember when I was a teenager and he talked to me about how stupid it was that he would get sued for some sort of mishap on a regular basis. He'd go into the pre-trial discovery, show the attorneys that his product didn't fail. Even though they'd drop the case it would still cost him $10K each time. This was 40+ years ago. Didn't hear from him for most of my adult life. He vanished one day. Well, the other day my dad was at a store where he lives in another state. He noticed somebody staring at him. He looked up and recognized this bearded person's eyes. The guy said, "Hello..." and uttered my dad's name. It was our old cousin. No longer easily recognized due to a full beard, hat, etc. Ends up he left the US long ago due to IRS harassment. Lives in another country far away in the country of his wife's origin. Was just here visiting his son. It reminds me of the characters from the Gulch. This guy did very well for himself and really went Galt. He occasionally sneaks back in to visit his son. A real life Gulcher...

    Thanks for sharing this true life story. It is both sad and beautiful at the same time.

    And yet, after a Producer heads for the Gulch, the parasites land on another victim. It's only when the victims are large enough or there are enough of them that a critical mass of loss is recognized. As I have made remark to my fellow Producers, we still have a very long way to fall.

    Well speaking of which. I received a letter from the Texas Drivers License bureau telling me I cannot renew my license by mail any longer. I need to bring proof of citizenship, Social Security Card, Voter registration, Passport and/or Birth Certificate. I've had my license since I was 14 years old and my family has been in Texas since the 1830's. I wrote the Governor. More to come when he responds.

      NYS requires all that and more for Citizens to renew. I too, have had my license since I was in my teens. I am not yet 60. However, we will gleefully hand out licenses to illegals to "make our roads safer". It's reverse discrimination. Can't wait to leave this state!

      Well there's your problem. All you need to do is move to Mexico, get citizenship there, the come back across the border illegally. Hell, probably half the states will be happy to give you a driver's license!

      The reason??? Illegal aliens. If the get a driver's license they can disappear in the Democrat ether. If you want to blame somebody, blame the Democrats for refusing to support a strong immigration policy.

      Is it your age? Apologies, but I know that if you had a full driver license in Texas at the age of`14, you are at least as old as I am :-) and you don't seem to shy away from mentioning your age.....this is what I see on the Texas DL page.

      "In addition to the regular driver license renewal requirements, if you are 79 years of age or older you will be required to renew your driver license in-person at your local driver license office. During your renewal:

      You will be required to successfully pass a vision test, and
      A license and permit specialist will evaluate your responses provided at the time of your renewal regarding your medical history to determine if any additional testing is required*."

      Editing to add: Apparently, OK has no such laws, so I am in the clear for a few years.

      In their defense, they're trying to make sure no non citizens get a license, but you would think they would tie the issue to their own records, so they wouldn't cause problems for real US citizens. Bureaucracy doesn't seem to reside in the same dictionary as common sense.

    Good story.
    An earlier generation can give another lesson, get for yourself, and or your spouse, a passport of another country.
