The Chinese communist party has traditionally been suppressing bad news such as they were in the latest bird flu case that wiped out communities in China.
It is a documented fact that communist countries always put natural disasters occurring in the US and other Western states on the front page to discourage their citizens from longing for the life there. That included plagues as well, while at the same time they effectively blocked any info on their own soil.
It is not a cultural thing. It is communist propaganda.
