Do politicians lie to you? Most Gulchers will, I think, will agree that they do.A better question may be, ;Do politicians ever tell you the truth? I have discovered that the people are lied to primarily in order to keep the liar or liars in office. They may use excuses such as it's for the good of the country, or that it may not look good, but in the long run, it's a matter of something bad that will eventually be a good outcome. For example, the two world wars.In both cases the USA had decided to be neutral. Everyone knew that the neutrality depended largely on the combatants leaving America alone. If the USA was attacked, it would respond by by joining the side that didn't attack them. In both WW1 and WW2 the antagonist was comprised of Germany and others who faced off against the allies who were made up of Britain and France Japan, was the powerhouse who allied themselves with Germany. So, without writing an entire history book, here's what was told to the American people. In WW1 The land war had devolved into trench warfare which was a stalemate. It amounted to who could keep their armies supplied with munitions and supplemental materials . Germany was in a better position to do so as Britain needed to get it's supplies mostly from the USA. British ships carrying war materials from America became the target of German submarines. The Germans managed to sink most of British shipping so they started hiding war materials on American ships. Eventually, the Germans got wise to this and issued warnings to America that if American ships or British ships carrying Americans and hiding war cargo for England would become legitimate targets of war,So now comes the british ship The Lusitania. A huge four stack liner with four giant turbines that was the fastest thing afloat in those times. She was nicknamed "The Greyhound." The forward cabins were scooped out and in their place were water tight bins filled with guncotton. A highly inflammable chemical needed for use with arms such as cannons.

When the Lusitania sailed from the USA to England, the Germans knew about the illicit cargo.Four submarines were sent after the Greyhounf which was Lusitania's nickname and at the peril of their lives the Germans warned The Lusitania that if they didn't turn around and off-load their armaments they would be fired upon. The sleek beautiful ship paid no attention. Even though it contained over 100 Americans it was also filled with women and children. Over a thousand of them.

In 1941, the Japanese needed war materials, and like the England of 1915, got it's material from America. Once America cut them off they decided to punish America and get what they needed by threatening further punishment. They attacked the American Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and decimated.it.In the case of the Luisitania, First Lord of the Amiralty,Winston Churchill and American soon-to-be-sec. of state Robert Lansing were complicit in maneuvering the slaughter. In the case of Pearl Harbor, our "Good pal" Winnie was once again "Saving" England at the expense of hundreds of lives. The press was told that the Lusitania was attacked without warning and that the women and children escaping in lifeboats were shot by Germans from the submarines as they sat helpless in their wooden boats.Which was a complete fabrication. In the case of Pearl harbor, Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt Knew 10 months in advance of the planned attack.

In both cases, both attacks could have been avoided if the best interests o the people were truly put in first place.
Those were the biggest lies I could think of. You can multiply those by the hundreds, or perhaps thousands of lies told by the "Elites" to us poor ignorant common folks. So, if your first impression is that you're being lied to, you are probably right..

What FDR did was to ban scrap metal sales to Japan, because that market was the primary source of materials they needed to build weapons. That was the first trigger that led Tojo to conclude that war was inevitable. FDR next stopped the sale of oil to Japan, which gave them no choice but to find other sources in Southeast Asian countries. When the English and the Dutch followed FDR's lead on oil sales, Japan decided to invade their colonies for oil and rubber supplies.

Ironically, Tojo favored the Japanese army plans to pour more effort into subduing China, with an invasion of the USSR to follow, since many Siberian troops had been sent West to fight the Nazi invasion. There was little favor in a naval battle with the largest fleet in the world, but FDR's moves had forced them to invade territories held by US allies. If the Pearl Harbor attack had carried out the third strike as originally planned, and destroyed our naval fuel supplies, we could have been kept out of the fight for nearly two years. Lucky for us, the cautious Admiral Nagumo was unsettled when his pilots reported no aircraft carriers in Pearl Harbor, and feared that if he didn't withdraw, those carriers could find and destroy his entire force.

Another connivance FDR was engaged in was to support the return of our European allies to their Southeast Asian colonies. That had an impact that helped start the Vietnam conflict. Ho Chi Minh's partisans worked with our OSS in fighting the Japanese, and were promised that the US would not support the recolonization of their territory. While a communist, the Vietnamese leader did not like the idea of becoming a subject of either the USSR or China, and could have become the "Tito of the East," independent like the Yugoslav leader. Unfortunately, the lie he was told destroyed any friendly thoughts he had about the US, and made him seek aid from the USSR.

      Thanks DrZ.
The carriers- Yes the carriers were not in port. Do you have any background on that? Was it all of them, when moved, for what reason- another mission, who gave the instruction? Would it have been normal for all the carriers based at Pearl Harbor to move out at the same time?

There were only two carriers in the Pacific at the time, USS Enterprise, and USS Lexington. Both had been ordered to bring aircraft to Midway and Wake islands, to help reinforce their defenses. Enterprise was supposed to arrive back at Pearl on the 6th, but got held up by a storm, or it would have been attacked in harbor on the 7th. Lexington was on the way to Midway when the attack happened, and turned around to try to find the Japanese fleet.

Some writers mistakenly include the USS Saratoga as one of the carriers based at Pearl, but it was based out of the West coast, and was in San Diego when the attack happened.

Ok, nothing strange or unusual about those movements. The conclusion (I make) is that they were not sent out by someone who knew about the attack in advance and wanted them out of the way.

Pearl Harbor was decimated by steel from the scrap left by the torn down elevated train in NYC. Ironic?

Yes, and the zeroes were built by Mitsubishi - the car company today. The major Japanese war machine companies were evolved from samurai families (Mitsubishi, Honda, and Toyota are three of many). The Toyota symbol is an outline of a samurai helmet. Not that all this means much today, but it's interesting history.

          What else would they do?
In America, we turned from cars to jeeps and tanks. In Japan they turned from tanks and planes to cars. There's an interesting analogy somewhere there. As Trump continues to build up our military, the advances in weaponry is jaw dropping. A ship the size of a destroyer carries firepower that is as powerful as a WW2 battleship, a cannon fires shells as fast as the rounds of a machine gun, not to mention lasers and things that I can look at, and know they are a weapon but can't tell you what they do. We've come a far cry from the Colt six-shooter when Alan Ladd blew Jack Palance away in "Shane." And the hand cranked Gatling gun was high Tech..

Soichiro Honda, the founder of Honda Motors was the son of a blacksmith who had a bicycle repair business. His mother was a weaver, she designed a loom to weave particularly complex patterns.

The current Toyota logo is from 1989. It is described by the company with the usual pyscho-social guff, I have seen no reference to helmets.
          etc.

I got some of my information by attending a lecture on Japanese samurai history less than a year ago. The individual was a practitioner of the samurai arts and had been to Japan on numerous occasions to study the subject. He had displays of various original artifacts including a helmet whose outline fit the Toyota logo. Including the name "Honda" in my post may have been an error on my part of remembering the list of modern companies he named in his lecture about surviving samurai family names in Japan today. He mentioned several car companies and a few others. I knew of the Mitsubishi zeroes a long time ago.

Yes, some stories go this way, some that. Soichiro Honda is now a legend.

After the war Japan, its economy, its industry were in a bad way, bombed, destroyed, and short of skills.
Some very curious developments then took place. In a decade, industry was back up, in another decade a giant motor industry was rising. It broke a few motor industry traditions, they produced vehicles that a buying public would want. They did not follow the Italian and old English (Ferrari, Morgan, AstonMartin) of design with engineering passion, nor the Germans for making the best and price will follow, nor some of the UK and US companies that would produce and price as per market research outfits told them. They designed, made, and built vehicles that buyers saw they could afford, that soon earned a reputation for quality, reliability and performance, all this while customers recommended the brand and bought the same brand again in a few years time.
A crucial part of that was manufacturing. In 1951, Japan called in an expert in statistical quality control, WE Deming an American engineer.
US industry had no use for these ideas then, it thought. In Japan he toured and lectured, they bowed, they sat at his feet and absorbed. His ideas were taken up with relish, notably in motor vehicle, electrical and electronic industries. Many call it- the Toyota Production System.

Read the book Day of Deceit by Robert Stinnett for the truth about Pearl Harbor. Of course, the book is described as a "conspiracy theory" today by wikipedia, but my elder relatives who experienced it at the time agreed with the facts in the book. It was no theory.

Good point. It escapes attention that all the alphabet soup projects used by Roosevelt to make it look as if something was being done for the economy but actually had little or no effect at all. It took a world war to finally warm up the oil so the motor of the economy would finally start to roll. No one could afford cars, but the USA could build tanks, warplanes, guns, and cannons. The factories started humming again and one of the Japanese generals feared that they had "Awakened a sleeping tiger."

Roosevelt went into debt to create the money to pay for the artificial demand of war materials. It wasnt until later that the inflation surfaced from the printing of the money

I did not read the book but understand that it proves FDR had knowledge of the Japanese intention and in fact the US was pushing Japan into the war.

I was in the belief that it was the other way around. The US threatened oil supply for Japan and they had to act to prevent that.

How did the US force Japan?

I don't know if Pearl Harbour was fake news, but the Japanese Navy Admiral and the fighter pilot seemed to have been hell bent to kill Americans.

As I understand it, Japan had to find an alternative source of oil and had decided to attack and secure the Philippines. They attacked the US fleet at Pearl Harbor to remove any major opposition to that. The assumption was the US would focus their remaining fleets on Europe. Yamamoto knew better than to awaken Gojira-san but he had his orders.

What annoys me the most is that the most admired characters of WW2 were Churchill and Roosevelt. Actually, they mere probably the greatest villains, and WW1's secret scrificer Winston Churchill "saved Britain" by orchestrating a calamaty that, had it been known, would have ended Churchill's career, and maybe even his life.

Churchill did a lot to save England.

I am not sure about FDR, though.

His kowtowing to Stalin and letting him take half of Europe as slaves under communist rule takes all the glory off of him.

Eisenhauer was not much better, either.

He was too much concerned about "image" of holding together the Alliance, and closing his eyes to Stalin's dictatorial instincts.

Churchill was, in a way, a futurist in that he had a knack of seeing accurately the results of current actions as a result in the future.Since he put the future of England above all else, he was impervious to how many deaths it took to keep Great Britain great. American lives, even British lives were not important so long as they served to keep England on top and western civilization in general dominant.

I certainly do not like FDR, and I resent the way he and his New Deal have been crammed down our throats. But I don't understand just how you know that he (or Churchill) knew about the Pearl Harbor attack 10 months in advance. I am not unwilling to listen, but at this point I don't necessarily buy it.

I'm sorry, I am very old and I have forgotten the books and authors. Not to worry, however, all you need to do is google up a list of reference books on FDR as well as biographies and you'll find much of what has become common knowledge.FDR as a villain came to my attention when I read about how he would not allow a boat full of Jews trying to escape from German concentration camps to land in the USA and sent them back across the Atlantic to certain death.

Ah, ma Belle, sadly it is true. Roosevelt was one of the elites whose kinship to the English upper classes led him to have sympathies to them. He, of course knew what was good for the middle class better than they knew themselves. Yes, he knew how to talk (down) to them and was a winner as an orator, but he never for a minute forgot that he was better than them, so it was his duty to lead them even if it meant the ultimate sacrifice (for them). However, if you do just a bit of research, you'll discover pretty irrefutable evidence of Roosevelt's deceit. I was raised in a very Democrat family and he was my hero until I learned to think for myself. My cousins still won't talk politics to me, since I keep destroying all their diatribes which makes them look ignorant. Which they aren't. They are smart ant learned but their brains remain stymied when applied to what they consider to be justified loyalty.

Then there are smaller lies such as "The Gulf of Tonkin Incident" that create the excuse for smaller wars that go on for decades and fought with strategies that guarantee its continuation without end until the people finally tire of it. The government will tell the truth when it serves its interests and will help to ensure a larger lie latter on.

I believe nothing that comes out of our government currently. Unfortunately, that applies to Trump also. He told us that the tariffs he put on chinese imports are paid by CHINA. In fact, they are paid by american companies and therefore by americans. It was a LIE, plain and simple, and he kept repeating it over and over. I have checks to prove that my small company had to pay the tariffs on stuff we bought from china.

He also said that his tax cut was good for small business. NOT TRUE. Tax rates for business used to be 15% up to $50k in profits, and something like 35% after that. NOW, its 21% on ALL income. That means for small businesses making 50k or less, their TAX WENT UP.

Another Lie from Trump. Of course, the other politicians lie ALL the time, so Trump is better than they are, but....

Since I'm no longer in a small business, I cannot challenge you on that score. As to who pays the tariffs-- could you lay out how that works? How we wind up paying them? I am not a Trumpeter so if he screws up, I'd like to know about it. So far, I think he's done pretty good, but "By their acts shall you know them."

We buy and pay for something from a Chinese company for $1000. They ship it to us in the USA. It arrives in the USA and has to be cleared by us customs before it is released. Us customs multiplied the invoice amount by the Tariff ( currently 25%} and makes us pay $250 to the us government before they release it to me.

I think except for a few lies, trump has been better than any democrat. That said, he sticks to the lie that the Chinese pay for his tariffs

The Chinese goods are shipped to the US at a certain price. Then customs adds the tariff to that price. So you the customer now pay the original price plus the tariff. The Chinese just have reduced sales due to the higher prices we pay. Worse, many American products use parts made in China. The tariffs make those parts more expensive. And thus the American products are more expensive. In all cases, we pay.

đź‘Ť Both your examples are excellent, Herb.
The example of Pearl Harbor was widely known and discussed in the news at that time. The truth was covered up by the media because war is the health of the state, and the media knew that they would be silenced and closed down if they didn't fall in line as instructed. My grandfather opened my eyes about it when I was a teenager and later I read accounts of the events on my own that supported what he told me. (Grandfather had 2 sons who risked their lives in WW2 in the Pacific.)
I would add the example of the "Civil War". Everything we know about the reason for that war is a fraud and the participants that we were taught were "heroes", in fact, were war criminals. Lincoln jailed everyone who opposed him and tried to have the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court arrested for pointing that Lincoln's actions were the unconstitutional actions of a dictator. All of this has been covered up in falsified "history".
We are raised and indoctrinated in government schools to trust government and not trust the free market. We are taught the lie that anyone who is successful in private business is a thief and only government politicians should be trusted to protect us from the free market sharks.
Public schools are the first and worst instance of fake news in existence.

Trust no one in government. Talk is cheap.

Mr. A. Lincoln was in many ways an admirable man, as president, he was a secret dictator. What laws he broke and unconstitutionality he participated in were all meant to put the union back together. But could he have done it by obeying the Constitution? I think so, but that way would have made the war last longer.

The war was not even necessary and had the constitution have been followed it could not have happened. Lincoln violated the constitution even before the war started. He raised an army without permission of congress. Lincoln was required to call congress into session in order to do so, but instead he delayed calling congress for months while he raised the army, and spent money that was not approved to equip it. Doing so was a fait accompli; it gave northern newspapers months to convince the populace that war was unavoidable. Had he called congress into session as required by law, it is doubtful that the congress would have voted to go to war.
The facts are that the south seceded because the north increased tariffs more than double and the tariffs were overwhelmingly paid by southerners, while the taxes were being spent to aid northern industry- who supported Lincoln's election.
A few weeks before the action at Ft Sumter almost all northern newspapers were against war, but as soon as it became clear that the south would pursue a policy of free trade, the media turned to favoring war and blaming the south causing it. In fact the elite in NY were at fault for everything because they insisted on higher taxes on the south to benefit themselves. Fort Sumter was mentioned as an unimportant fort and not worth fighting for ... until it was exposed that without it the elite in NY would not receive any tariffs. Fort Sumter's position was to be able to prevent any shipping to travel through the largest Atlantic harbor in the south. It was valuable only as a way to collect taxes and that was why to the south it represented the freedom from taxation by a foreign power.
Like the American Revolution, the secession was for freedom, not for slavery. Federal laws were in place to continue to allow slavery in the south; it was not threatened at all. The war was entirely about the north enslaving the production of the south through taxation. Lincoln was a war criminal by the standards of that time and by the standards of today.

Good analysis. Sounds much more reasonable that the north wanted something from the south, and the south wanted as a result to simply split from the north. The north should have just let them go if they wanted OUT.

But those advantages are quickly turned into disadvantages in a collectivist society. An example is that it’s a lot of work and difficulty living alone in the woods or on a farm. But if the people around are thieves, it’s worse than being alone. I fear we are. Reaching a tipping point in this culture with the rise of socialism

I keep thinking that the "tipping point" remains just out of reach and we still may have time to right the ship. On the other hand, if we are there and it's too late, then to quote Dante, "Abandon all hope....."

The reason there is so much hatred against trump is that he is standing squarely against the Obama progressive plans. He is undoing the Obama legacy one executive order at a time. Hillary was supposed to win in 2016 and 2020 and continue the progressive agenda for a total of 16 heard and more through the Supreme Court picks.

Not only did that not happen, the fear is a total of 8 years of anti progressive policies and conservative Supreme Court picks could put a long lasting dent in the progressive movement.

Also, trump is upsetting the security of the bureaucrats Obama put in place, and they are trying anything to dump trump

Hopefully trump gets re elected. That would give us 4 more years to keep at least most progressive policies in check

And hopefully, the Republicans will get it through their heads that Trump's way is a winner and carry on with the next candidate,.A long, long run on the "right" side would be nice for a change. Make the Republicans the most populous party instead of the Democrats, because the socialist split might just fracture the Democrats into two parties. Watcha think, Term2?

I think that the immigrants from south america will team up with the millennials to install socialism one way or another in 2024. There is some degree of hatred for sanders, maybe because he is a rebel and will upset the cushy applecarts of the existing democrats. He will be prevented from winning the democratic nomination this time. I think bloomberg will team up with hillary and try to unseat trump by saying that voting for them will "undo the wrongs of 20216"... might work

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." (George Santayana) we can say the same for politicians and bureaucrats. Fro them, you could change the wording by substituting the word - Lies. The media should add-in that context as well. This morning watching FBN some of the news personnel are falsifying info they are saying on-air by their body language and the number of times they are blinking their eyes. It seems that the virus and tumbling of the Sock Market have them rattled. Trump is pretty masterful at shading the truth. We know for sure that the Dem's speak blatant lies. In their eyes, the common folk ".... can't handle the Truth."

another example... The US battle ship Maine exploded and sunk in Havana Harbor was reported by Chicago Tribune as being torpedoed with out substantiation lead to the Spanish-American war netting us Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philipines ceded by Spain. Later confirmed that a boiler had blown on the Maine.

I think, by the time of ww1, truth and facts had all but been buried, postmodern progressivism and communism were already in vogue with the delete ruleless class...it's been down hill since then.

So...who do I trust?..it's a pretty short list and none are in politics nor government...each instance is a separate trial of judgement.

With the possible exception of George Washington, there was never a politician who could be trusted, so get the truth first and trust with trepidation.

Think about it, why would any reasonable and freedom loving person EVER work in government as a politician? Politics is all about power over other people.

Well, the first thing I'd do is to ban parties. Only one loyalty -- that is, to the people of the USA. That is the first consideration and anything else comes after that. From that time forward the only conflict will be on different ways to utilize laws , concepts, premises, and rationality will prevail above all else. (Probably never happen).

parties are marketing organizations designed to provide money for seeking office. Not a good thing at all. If you passed a law that said that NO LAW could be used to take from one to give to another, big changes would be made. The end of lobbyists and perhaps even using the government to get goodies for certain groups.
