Well, yes. Precisely why America's communist political elites want to revert to the popular vote to elect the president and abolish the Electoral College.

Agree on the fatal flaw of democracy. America was never intended to be a democracy.
The Republican Party did not create America as a republic; that happened decades before the GOP existed. It was founded after the Whig party dissolved, and it's primary goal was to expand corporate welfare. Jefferson's "party" the Democratic-Republicans opposed big government and opposed a central bank. The Whigs were formed from former Democratic-Republicans who favored big government and a central bank, and were led by Henry Clay. They were more like the Federalist party in that respect, who expanded government and ignored the constitution to do so, as have both the Democrats and the Republicans in the past 100+ years.

We often state that the USA is a "republic," but how many of us recognize the elements that keeps a republic from descending into a majority rule democracy? Certainly the electoral college system used to elect the president is one example of what prevents the tyranny of the majority, but what else is there in our system, and how could it be improved to bolster those protections?

The Senate is a body that grants equal representation to all states, so that the big states are forced to compromise. It is also given greater authority over the makeup of the Executive, through the right of approval of cabinet members, and the Judiciary, through the right of approval of federal judges. What currently distorts the intent of the Senate is the 17th amendment to the Constitution, which authorized popular election of senators. Given party control of a sizable reelection war chest, senators get elected who often don't really represent the interests of their state constituents. Going back to the system that made senators elected by their state legislatures would be more in line with the intent of a republic.

The 9th and 10th amendments, which in theory gave the states and individuals control over all other activities not authorized for the federal government, have been sadly ignored as big government has ingested every aspect of control. The campaign demonizing "states rights" as being a bulwark of racism effectively emasculated these rightly authorized powers. We need to work to regain the rights of states and individuals to resist federal abuse of power. One weapon which was expected by the Founders to be frequently used was for states to exercise the practice of "nullification," which is for a state to exercise its right to ignore a federal law that it considered unconstitutional. Individuals were expected to be able to also announce their right to ignore such laws. The expected process was to pursue nullification in state courts, and following a state court's recognition of the claim, force the federal government to justify its actions through the federal judiciary. Too often the federal government engages in bullying, threats, and arrest of those who attempt to pursue such claims. We need to force a stronger adherence to nullification as a key element of a republic.

I do not want the Federal government to control everything in this country. Neither do I want the individual to be turned over as a serf to his state government. We need a far more explicit defense of individual rights, perhaps by a Constitutional amendment.

      LOL...

You expect people on the street understand the distinction? When even those Dems running for the presidency have no idea?

It's a sad reminder that we've abandoned our duty to educate our younger folk about what makes the republic work as successfully as it has for almost 250 years. When I was in high school, we staged a constitutional debate, each posing as one of the Founders. We had no script, just a page with the key principles we each had to defend. It challenged us to understand what we were fighting for, and made each of us appreciate what an amazing thing our Founders had created.

It has been abandoned as too difficult for the limited number of brain cells of some on the left.

The typical reaction is to scrap everything the Constitution stands for and replace it with BLM. That is much easier to grasp, requires no effort and puts the charge on the other side.

Isn't it wonderful how the logic of the left works?

    Excellent post. Quite clear.

All appeals to the government for help with... my home, medical care, my retirement etc... must be limited by the rights of the individual.

When that is overcome, democracy becomes nothing more than a legal lynch mob.

A subthread on the origin of "America". The Constitution was very carefully crafted to present an architecture for citizenship. The design of the United States of America is presented in the Constitution. The form of government envisioned by the drafters was a republic. That republic is in want of support. Our elected officials have violated their individual and collective oaths of office and the pledge of allegiance.

Quote for Alexander Tytler borrowing from others. How true it is!

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.”

Democracy = Mob rules. The founders considered democracy a dirty word. They created a republic guided by the Constitution of the USA.

Are we not ruled by perverts, queers, transgenders, pedophiles and corrupt politicians in our daily life.

HR and the Boss looked at me cross eyed with question marks over their heads when I told them that cultural maxism and post modernism has no place in Hospice...it's time we get real and take care of all that come to us and foster that much needed mutuality mankind desperately needs right now.
HR tried to say we couldn't ask certain questions of new employees like, are you married, have kids or why did you apply for this job etc.

J.C. you can't have a F'ing normal conversation any more!

          THAT is demonocray FAILING!!!

            Yes, democracy failing.

It is not TOO MUCH of it, it is the lack of it due to liberal anarchy.

The left confuses democracy with the "anything goes" rule. By that they mean anything goes that the left needs to exert control. It does not apply to order, discipline, productivity or any means that makes a society flourish.

The left will squeal and cry "democracy is in danger" every time they don't get what they want which is to loosen up the fabric of society in lieu of chaos and anarchy.

So let's not confuse democracy with a drive to socialism/communism.

Still...the mob rules. The very mobs that do not produce, cannot create and do not participate nor are invested in America...not to mention the anything immoral goes and is favored over the moral and the just.

In short, either way you look at it, whether in government or in the street, we are ruled by the dumbest among us...that's demonocracy for ya.

It's a utopian idea that might never work in real life.

I just posted this on FB: Socialism and communism are born of democracy.
That is why our Founding Fathers made sure we were NOT a democracy! We are a Constitutional Republic! There is a big, big difference! A democracy is ruled by the most votes, (mob rule). A Constitutional Republic is ruled by our US Constitution and everyone is heard. Even minorities’ votes count!
