Over dinner, my wife and I like to log into netflix and watch an episode of a television series.

But most series are the same, fair to great episodes at the beginning, then somewhere before the second season the progressive drum comes out and each episode is yet another excursion into social issues pontification land.

I was really getting into "House, M.D.", but then we got to the second season.

Can anyone suggest any television content on Netflix which actually wants to tell a damned story, not beat me over the head with the same tired sermons?

Thanks.

I had not heard about Straczynski's new series. Thank you. I am a big B5 fan.

You want a story? B5 has a 5 year chronological story so don't try to start in the middle.
Babylon 5 is still the best that tv has ever offered the audience. I think its only available as a rental on Netflix, so the dvd set is a much better deal at $110 on Amazon.

Straczynski has a new series, Sense8, coming soon and that could be the opportunity to get B5 back on tv or streaming.

My wife and I liked the series, Mr. Selfridge. It is about a mostly rational individualist business man with a family that starts and maintains a business collaborating with many other individuals. He never takes the immorally seductive “by any means necessary” route to achieve his ends (in business.) The one time he did sacrifice his time for a "societal duty” away from his business, his enemies caused his reputation to go to hell. “Society” didn't much care.

I think Fargo was one of the best mini series ever shown on television, and I believe you can get the first (and so far only) season streamed through Netflix. I can't remember any progressive slants; in fact the show got better as it unfolded. The characters were quirky and memorable, and Billy Bob Thornton was magnificent! There were more twists and turns in this show than a Russian gymnast, and a few characters that you love to hate!

We rather like "Murdock" - it's a detective series set in Canada around 1890 time frame

I refused to watch the new Battlestar Garglactica after seeing that Starbuck got a sex change operation.

Oh, yes, ancient civilizations with divergent histories will have the same stupid cultural values we have.

I would give money if someone would make a tv series around The Mote in God's Eye.
    Or even just a movie.

OMG, yes, how could I leave out B-5???

    ::scowl::

Don't leave out Serenity. It's the culmination of the series, and is kinda relevant.

I'm a huge fan of "The Mentalist". Not sure if it's on Netflix.

Never seen such an unapologetic assault on evil.

I learned why old men drool sometimes when I watched one particular scene over and over and over again.

    Potential spoiler alert:

I am wondering which way that will go with it. Seems like they are both talking of corporate greed and government greed. By greed I mean the desire to have the unearned wealth by individuals within both corporations and government.

It seems to me that the last season ended on a note of one gives us tyrants and the other a financial collapse and war. Cameron seems to be looking for a third option. I am wondering if she will find it.

    Burn Notice.
Not only does it tell an exciting story with interesting characters, it actually explains how and why the spy techniques are used.
    Spartacus
The first season only which is all about gladiators and how they train, the politics of the gladiator slave owners and lots of tradition and verbal structure are presented. Very authentic and well researched. Lots of graphic sex, however, if that bothers you.
    Fringe
A S.F. series utilizing much recent quantum theory. A little politics but nothing blatantly progressive. Some good special effects and better than average acting and writing.

I resisted the updated Battlestar Gallactica for a few seasons until my son was watching it one day and I got hooked. Binge watched the entire series over last summer. It is something that you need to follow, as there are long storylines. Hard to jump around and keep abreast of what's going on.

Friends & I decided with you --- we created a "history" night. We began just after the dinosaurs, skipped Egypt & Rome --- because we had already been there --- moved right into the middle ages and are now entering early Renaissance art. It has taken a few years but it has been a great trip. Documentaries are the way to go & we have dinner while we watch. The one that took the longest to watch was the philosophers which required a lot of pauses while we discussed what we were learning.

The appeal of the show is watching the self destruction of Walt. I did not understand its popularity either until I caught a Marathon one weekend. Watched a few episodes and was hooked in.

It is well written and supremely well acted. Bryan Cranston was amazing. You wind up not only sympathizing but identifying with his character.

Battlestar Galactica, Mad Men, Orange is the New Black (1st season only), Firefly. Also, Avatar: the Last Airbender is probably the highest-quality TV show i've ever watched in terms of plot, themes, and character development. It's animated, so good if you want to watch with kids too.

I like Continuum as well but the Syfy series is starting to become one of those political statements about corporate greed…

It is said that Cecil B DeMille, when asked why there were no social messages in his epic films, replied, "If you want to send a message, call Western Union."
