Private Message- 1351I do not like that novel. I don't like the people in it, especially Dominique.
Not going to try reading it again.
Jan - 1352Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 9 months ago to Yesterday, USPS Tells Me To Post My Address Where Police Can See It, Now I Know WhyThat is really the rub, isn't it: I am more afraid of the police than of the criminals.
Jan - 1353Interesting comparison. Thanks for posting. There is some direct evidence for, "...there is pre-sensory knowledge embedded in the structure of the mind and the nervous system’s synaptic connections which can be further created and modified over time." If this is factually true, then it is real and we just have to go onward from there.

Jan - 1357Oh. Yes.
Jan - 1358Thank you. It is even more amusing because my purse is about 6" x 8"...so while I could be smuggling in a Beretta, an Uzi is right out.
Jan - 1359Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 9 months ago to Trump's Record: and Why Are People Throwing Reason Out the Door For Populist Thinking?Bought the book.
Jan - 1360Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 9 months ago to Trump's Record: and Why Are People Throwing Reason Out the Door For Populist Thinking? Thanks. Most of the 'introversion is good' topic books that I have had handed to me are just cheer leading to try to bolster the crumbled self-image of introverts. Since I never needed this, not being the crumbling kind, they were pretty useless.
A book on that topic with actual science in it would be welcome.
Jan - 1361We have had occasional posts from a Gulcher in Venezuela. What I find in your, and his, posts, are the reality of economic collapse - as opposed to the hypothetical accounts from people who have not 'been there'.
I do have a couple of questions: Why do you say that a Buck = Gold = risk? Did people who had precious metals (gold/silver) fare better than those who did not? Was there any other portable commodity you would have stocked up on if you had been able to see the future?
I wish you well, and good fortune.
Jan - 1362Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 9 months ago to Trump's Record: and Why Are People Throwing Reason Out the Door For Populist Thinking? Is it by Susan Cain?
Jan - 1363Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 9 months ago to Trump's Record: and Why Are People Throwing Reason Out the Door For Populist Thinking?OMG.
Jan - 1364Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 9 months ago to Trump's Record: and Why Are People Throwing Reason Out the Door For Populist Thinking?I find Trump repulsive in personality, and there is a lot of pro-and-con about his value as a potential president - I am still undecided about that (personal reaction notwithstanding). So far, the best I can say about Trump is that Putin would be afraid of him. The worst I can say of him is that I would not be proud to have him represent me and my country.
I do love the shake up he is giving the political arena, though. He may be the icebreaker that shatters the floes so that other vessels can sail into port.
Jan - 1365Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 9 months ago to Trump's Record: and Why Are People Throwing Reason Out the Door For Populist Thinking?Thank you. I have done something similar, though it was with a couple of $20's...and I was desperately poor at the time.
And further thanks for your last paragraph, XenokRoy. I appreciate people who take time to make sure that a conversation is impersonal.
Jan - 1366Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 9 months ago to BREAKING: Cheryl Mills To Destroy Emails About Boss Hillary ClintonExcellent post, both for its analysis of the current demographic balance and for drawing the comparison with Imperial Rome.
Jan - 1367That is a great description: I can imagine you in the bin, arms and legs sticking out as if you were a turtle on your back and the bin was your shell. Arms and legs waving slightly.
You actually came out of this in good shape - and you should be back to normal in no time. (If you start to have problems with balance, you might consider yoga or Tai Chi - these can restore mobility and balance to people (young or old) without putting stress on your body.)
Take care.

Jan - 1369Ewwww! Fortunately, I have not often come across that sort of reinactor. As a matter of fact, most of them seem to work in computer-related fields.
Jan - 1370That is a pretty good description of it. But "smelly"...did you forget "smelly"?
Jan - 1371Maybe. Are they teaching Creationism too???
Jan, snark - 1372Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 10 months ago to Astrophysicists create the first accurate map of the universe: It’s very flat, and probably infiniteI am just glad that we are actually investigating these questions. I read that an old joke among astrophysicists used to be, "We're going to do a seminar on Cosmology tonight. Bring a sixpack."
Jan - 1373Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 10 months ago to Astrophysicists create the first accurate map of the universe: It’s very flat, and probably infiniteI read that book in high school and loved it - for a variety of reasons.
It still comes down to a question of tools, though: One must have good enough tools to measure a tiny difference. If the sphere is many times larger than the Hubble limit, we may not be able to measure the difference...yet.
Jan - 1374I find this disturbing.
While I agree that a private institution has a right to set its in-house rules, I think that the fact that people are willing to tolerate, and even support, suppression of opinion is a bad sign. What ever happened to,"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"?
Why is it more important to TCU to be politically correct than to support free speech?
Jan - 1375Posted by $ jlc 10 years, 10 months ago to Astrophysicists create the first accurate map of the universe: It’s very flat, and probably infiniteI do not have the background to say more than I like to observe an increase in factual knowledge about the universe and its origins, but I also note that the 'best fit' model for those observations changes quite frequently.
Like Robert Fl, I wonder how one would distinguish between a flat universe and an immense one with a curvature that is beyond our current ability to measure.
