It would be interesting to find out which hand it was they attempted to cut off. In strict Muslim usage, it should be the right hand. The right is the hand which used for eating, the left being used clean oneself after excreting. Therefore the left is never used at table. If the right is amputated, that person is now pariah and cannot eat in the company of others.

  Actually, it is still in use, denoting a young male pig. At a certain point, they are castrated and become barrows or left whole and become boars. A female piglet is called a gilt until she is bred then becomes a sow. But a pig is a pig is a pig is a pig.
