I don't get the fantasy of lights winking out. It's like the fantasy of Utnapishtim's family watching safely as the evils of the world are destroyed by flood and then being granted immortality. Gilgamesh is the oldest story known; so this fetish has been around for a while.

I am not saying I don't have similarly weird fetishes, but watching decadence cleansed away in an apocalypse is not one of mine.

It's a fantasy in that the collapse of US economy and gov't has not happened yet. I don't mean fantasy in that it certainly will never happen.

I do think it's a fetish or fanciful notion that crops up again and again. People enjoy the very narrative that the world is becoming hopelessly decadent, the decadence is erased only by total destruction, and Utnapishtim, Noah, or some of the few not participating in the decadence are spared.

rocky, this was a good idea. you tickled my old dj

"song poems" which my dj alter-ego has put out
over the past 50 years, like 45 minutes each of
joanie madden or billy ocean or chicago, classics
    among my close-in friends....

Mungo Jerry: "If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal. If her daddy's poor you can do what you feel..." Honestly, I wonder if some people actually conceptualize philosophical abstractions or just kick their legs when something strikes their knees...
