When I heard this on the news I was amazed at 2 things. "Free speech zone" how do you say that without cracking up, it's like the no abilities law posted elsewhere, and then the 7 day waiting period to express or exercise free speech. Come next week I'm gonna have some fun with this one. And yea thanks Reason TV for a another entertaining video.

I 'll be interested to hear where you decide your students ' free speech zone is Mr. Sankey. There is an eerie similarity to college policy and the federal govt during the recent Bundy raid. They also had a free speech zone. What playbook is this out of?

Good question: I teach what the 1st Am says, congress can't make any laws yet they have. Our admin told the students the I heart boobies wristbands were not to be worn and they asked me what I thought. I believe at an educational setting classrooms disruptions should be addressed. Handing out Constitutions (outside of class) or wearing wristbands do not disrupt classrooms and in regards to the wristbands I believe the SCOTUS agreed. So the "zone" ought to be defined by our national borders, at least that's my understanding, the students can decide for themselves.

good points. I read your earlier comment to mean a possible experiment. What if the free speech boundary at school was [x]. Would that necessarily include pep rally signs, handing out booster flyers for activities etc.? I remember college campuses as a very busy area filled with students setting up tables promoting this or that-many things I strongly disagreed with-when did it change I wonder? and why?

So if there was a "free speech" boundary I would oppose it. Remember the high schoolers that got busted for their "bong hits for Jesus" banner were not busted for free speech but for promoting illegal activity. We have kids promoting things I do not support during recess and lunch and I don't care, it's their right to do so.

There's also that aspect of propriety, which seems to be something that many have forgotten. For instance, the Westboro Baptist Church and some militant anti-abortion protesters. Both have a right to express their views, but propriety says you should allow a grieving family to mourn their loss privately without interference. And likewise, a free citizen that has made a decision to have an abortion should be allowed to do so without being harassed and abused going into or departing a clinic. Civility and decency has degraded in our society and a narcissism has taken hold that only my rights are important.

True enough it's that old knowledge without wisdom thing. I do see a difference between Hilo boy constitutional crusader and phelps who poisoned everything he touched but should the law?
Did the Hilo marathon a few years ago, it rained for all 26.2 miles with some roads having major flow rates. Just under 4hrs.

I loved that cop. I remember, years ago, when cops actually vlaued your rights as an American citizen, rather than playing paramilitary stormtrooper. Maybe someday... we'll see more of the ones on the video, and less of the ones on TV.

Also, a point as the article had the Cato institute's link for their buck-a-pop constitutions... thank you!

This is possibly a slope those who consider themselves in charge some what slippery. I may be wrong, but this happens every time a true patriot exercises their rights in the Constitution. Those who know nothing of this document believe anything they are told and love to just throw their weight around because well I guess they were told they can. It's from the Good and Plenty Amendment.

Free speech zone. That give me an idea for my kids. I'm going to establish a "free whining zone" for them - probably in the garage somewhere.

    Thanks lefties!

Have you ever tried to hand out pocket Constitutions...anywhere? I order them by the 100 lot and distribute them throughout the year, (grocery clerks, waiting rooms, co-workers, family, friends, acquaintances), particularly 4th of July week. The majority of people act like I am trying to hand them a used tissue. I simply ask them if they would like one and get mostly the same facial reaction as if I offered them a Bible or religious tract. People do refuse, saying things like "I don't want/need that" or "Please, I don't discuss politics." The progressive movement has managed to brainwash a large majority into thinking the Constitution is either a rag, a dirty work by religious zealot racist slave owners, or an outdated old document of no use in today's modern world. Get a few copies and give it a try. And the video was priceless. How great would that be?

Passing out flyers, handbooks, and "broadsides" has been an American tradition since before the Revolution. Doing it during class is unacceptable, but being kept from doing it at all, is even more unacceptable.

those who administer these made up rules should be sent to schools to learn about the constitution so they will not respond to whom ever is telling them what to do. more lunacy in "america"?

I wonder how handing out any document represents "protest". I'd send a copy of the constitution to the President of the Univ. and ask him to show what it says that he protests against?
