But my anecdotal observations are that gov't dependence really has increased. I have known people living in $300k houses, in the Midwest where the ave prices is closer to $200k, who completely expect to receive gov't assistance with their mortgage, kids college, medical bills. It never occurs to them that *they* are the ones who fund the gov't. There's always someone richer who you can imagine paying your bills, but there simply aren't enough rich people to pay for everyone's needs.
