As a college freshman living in a dorm in the South and about to enter a tough engineering school in 1960, I had the following posted above the desk in my cubby hole:
"All things cometh to he who waiteth, if he worketh like hell while he waiteth." Best advice I ever gave myself.

  As I left for a tough engineering program at Cal Poly many years ago my dad (who is a p*ssy) said, "You'll flunk out and be home by Christmas." That's all I needed to hear. Haven't been home since.

I have this discussion with a couple friends of mine who continually lament their underpaying jobs. If you want to work, there's work to be done and money to be made. It aint easy, no doubt. But, it's there.

  I've never understood complaining about your pay... we, as grown ups, AGREE to take jobs knowing full well what the pay IS. I'm so tired of people removing personal responsibility from the outcome of their own decisions. Everything is someone elses fault...somehow.

    Raise prices and/or hire people. That is SO easy for me to say. I've never been able to execute it very well. I'd love to spend time with people who have pulled it off.

        Most good single malts are equal to or better than JW Blue. JW Blue is fine, but even if I were a billionaire I wouldn't buy it when there are good single malts available.

        I think their value is in a brand. People who are not into it know that the JW experience will be at least decent, and they pay for that. Maybe also the brand has a psychology associated with it.
        
        I agree with you-- not a value proposition that works for me at all.

  I agree. They should talk to hiring managers at better paying jobs. Find out what they look for. Maybe they want someone who can do XYZ, someone with a certain cert, someone who presents himself a certain way, someone with a large Rollodex of potential customers. If they do that with a few different employers / recruiters, they'll start to get a feel for just what they need to do to earn more.

  How about a reminder to the students that what they're doing in your class is NOT that they're working for YOUR future or their PARENTS' future... ? Correct answer is left as an exercise for the students... :)

Good things come to those who earn it AND wait. Many successful people didn't succeed overnight. You try to go out and earn it, and usually your deal doesn't work. It never works the way you think, at least if your like me. You keep on plugging away, trying new things though, because the alternative is to sit around and blame others.

I didn't like bosses. So, I opened a business so I could be the boss. Never worked so hard in my life. Was it worth it? From a work standpoint, no. From every other standpoint including personal satisfaction, yes indeed.
