Out of the blue a local Speculative Fiction/ Science Fiction readers group in Surprise Az has requested discounted hardcopies of Shadows Live Under Seashells so they (all 16 of them) can read and discuss it. Further, when they complete the reading and have the discussion I could be invited to sit with them to talk about it.
While I'm not the Comicon type (they are) its extraordinarily flattering to know that the word is spreading and people are interested.

That's awesome. My understanding is book readings are very helpful. They lead to more book readings. Eventually that leads to a radio interview, that will lead to larger book readings.

My understanding is it's common for a book to be out for a while before getting widespread notice. It's uncommon for the first book to be a huge hit immediately. If you get on interviews with this one, maybe the second or third will get mainstream national coverage.

Also, I've heard most people who think it's pretty good won't review it. People offended by it in some way will review it. That means if reviews are running 50/50 for and against, the vast majority likes it.

I'm excited for more people to get to read your book.

Damn, it looks like the whole thing fell through. These guys are adamant about less than $5 and won't accept eBooks. Its really disturbing to me that these folks are being this way. I really wanted to get Shadows Live Under Seashells into that type of environment for discussions. BAH.

A bit of a snafu with this group who asked for a discount on the paperback version of Shadows Live Under Seashells (about $11). I agreed to provide a discount, but when I told them the cost was $7.10 they balked saying they were hoping to get 16 books at less than $5 each. The $5 requested price was below even my costs. I offered them eBook copies at $2 per eBook which they declined, they insist on paperback.

While I was flattered by the request initially I'm really starting to wonder about it now. Things are still in discussion. But I have to say I'm much less flattered and a bit more disappointed.

We've created a monster with all the "promotional" pricing out there. People download all the free and 99 cent books and they expect either freebies or discounts on everything. I'm sure most of the cheap stuff that gets picked up sits on people's Kindle libraries but never gets read. The real cost of a book is the time necessary to read it, and for any book worth that time, the monetary cost, even for a top of the line, conventionally published book at $29.99, is trivial. As authors, we all know the time and effort necessary to produce our work. My mom said to my sister in a completely different context: "If you give it away they won't appreciate it." Get paid for your work.

I agree. The offer has passed. They and I both stuck to our guns. You value what you pay for. $7.10 was neither profitable to me not unreasonable to them. I'm a little disappointed, but that life.
