I said screw it and decided to watch the whole performance. It is mesmerizing. I'm struck by the economy of Horowitz's hand and finger movements compared to other pianists I have seen play that piece. It is supposed to be the hardest work to play in the entire repertoire. Khaling, in my humble opinion this is your best post, and that includes your review of The Golden Pinnacle.

It most certainly is a compliment. I loved your review of my book, but I thought that video was absolutely amazing and I was making a bit of light-hearted hyperbole, comparing it to your review. I'm sure I will rewatch the video. The Third has always been one of my favorites. I think you have lots of great posts, but I was feeling a little disgusted and out of sorts by things last night and that video was the perfect antidote, a "celebration of man's achievement" (like TGP). Thanks again for posting it and I hope you didn't think there was anything negative or derogatory in my previous post. That's not my style.

Ayn Rand mentions a Rachmaninoff concerto in The Fountainhead. The Third Piano concerto is magnificent; I'll watch the video when I have time. If you like that concerto, listen to Edvard Grieg's only piano concerto. I believe Rachmaninoff cited Grieg as a musical influence, and Grieg's concerto has a drama and boldness similar to Rachmaninoff's Third. Happy Birthday, Sergei!
