"Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the smallest minority on earth is the individual)." - Ayn Rand (June 1963)

Looking at the way things are going now, she could have also said that a minority does not have the right to take away the rights of the majority.

Perhaps, but I see a more complicated and divisive dynamic at play. The minorities to which you refer may include any number of groups to whom "rights" have been granted. Of course, we know there is no such thing as a group right; there is only an individual right to life from which the others rights must follow. These are the rights to liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness. Liberty because man's means of survival is his mind, which depends on free thought. Property because man has specific needs to fulfill in order to survive; he cannot survive without material sustenance. The pursuit of happiness because happiness should be the goal directed action of his life. Do not that happiness is not guaranteed because existence precedes consciousness. Now, if we accept these rights, then minimum wage, welfare, government medical care, etc. should all be abolished. In this case, the right of the individual is upheld against the rights of any group of would-be looters.

"Individual rights are not subject to a public vote"

    Fully agree

Individual rights are not even subject to a vote by a bunch of big headed individuals in some white house.

If this were the case then a simple majority could give us slavery, or witch burning, or Obamacare

The quote is true. But here in 21st century America, that has been made superfluous. Our rights now seem to be under bureaucratic review, and we've let them do it.

Salty Dog, honestly, tell me what we could have done to stop it. I along with probably millions of others was marching in the streets, attending meetings, doing everything I could to stop Obamacare. Our efforts meant nothing. I don't know of anything else I could have done!

On a personal level Mama, I couldn't agree more. However as a group, we need to start holding our elected officials accountable. The arrogance of power these days seems to know no bounds. Witness the fact that Queen Nancy and Dingy Harry laughed, joked and gloated over the fact that they've used deceits in parliamentary procedures to accomplish their agenda...all the while the Republicans seemed to mope around powerless while they should have been shouting it from the rooftops.

My opinion is that the Republicans and Democrats are in it together. My opinion is also that we no longer live in a free society; what "the people" want is no longer relevant. So it's not that we've let them do it. We have no power to stop them.

In California, we follow the exact opposite philosophy. The majority can do whatever they want to the individual, and don't you forget it.
