For the love of tuna fishing...

I recently returned from my annual long range tuna fishing trip. I have been doing this for the past six years and each year my love of the sport grows. I have been fishing since I was just a tyke - stealing bacon from the table so I could sneak off to the lagoon and catch sculpin.

I mention this latest trip because of what I experience, in terms of the people. Those on board the boat (35 of us) represent a great cross section of society. We all, though, have the funds for this costly pastime. One of the guys on the boat was an NSA techie. Conversations with him were very interesting. Many of the guys are self-employed, owning their own businesses. Many of the guys, like me, are devout family men. Those conversations are the best. We worry about this big mess our kids are inheriting. Some good friendships are made and this year was no exception.

The ocean off of where khaling lives is so alive. We were visited by huge sharks, whales, tons of dolphin. I'm always amazed by the albatross that skim the surface, hundreds of miles from land.

If you haven't had the chance, you should seriously consider spending some time on the ocean on a smaller boat (not cruise ship). It clears the mind...

It seems to me that more men go fishing than women. Perhaps it's a male way of clearing the mind and sorting things out. In my experience, women use cleaning house as a way of doing that.

We just had the Bill Fish Tourney last weekend. I'm sure there were more fishers than fish. which didn't hurt the one that got away stories. Of course that was on the other side of the Baja.

During our trip we caught several striped marlin. Man, what a beautiful fish. We released all of them. One of them, the largest, swam right in front of me and grabbed the jig of the fisherman next to me. This fish had to have gone 600-pounds. It was really beautiful. I had never seen one that big up close and now I understand why fishermen obsess over them.

Very nice, I do love getting out on the water at every chance. Is a one man canoe small enough?

    Fresh Ahi for dinner tonight!
