Its the ultimate expression of fandom. THE big opportunity for fans to act and dress to show their support without hindrance.

Also an opportunity for the companies catering to them to do both business at the convention for existing products (franchises), and get their target audience motivated for upcoming products.

One of the most interesting things about comicon is the convergence that happens over years.

Originally it was the comic universe that drove it. Now, as you can see from the displays, movie/video and gaming franchises are become more and more important.

My wife and I went to the Phoenix Comiccon, and were disappointed that there was hardly anyone in cosplay. We have been going for at least ten years, we talked to some people and found out that friday start of Comiccon was cosplay day now. Unfortunately we went on Sunday. When the cosplayers are there, they are much more friendly than normals. So, next time it's Friday. Although, I would love to go to San Diego Comicon, you have to book a ticket a year in advance.

As a former comicbook publisher, I attended many comicons in San Diego. Kira's little revue had me nostalgic and wanting to barf at the same time.

    Thank you, Kira!

Yes, ditto - one of these years I will surely get there, but... not this one. 'Other fish to fry.

Something that always springs to mind when I see this kind of thing - also every Halloween - is that other than... ComiCons and Halloweens, the concept of the masquerade ball is almost completely gone from civilization. Maybe that's a big part of why both of these events continue to be so popular.

So I need to think about my future costume... hmmm.
