‘All about the money’: Motorists plagued by sky-high Calif. traffic ticket fines

Not to claim Fox News is always accuarte, but this doesn't seem like it is anything but an excellent example of just how our government has gone off the rails to pay for all the things they want to give to everyone in exchange for their loyalty. Seems a poster child for what most people seem to think of our current masters....

Good, I think California should triple from where they are now, and double all income taxes, and ban the usage of any and all water products, and California should quadruple the benefits of all illegal's and extend an invitation to all illegals across this country.

I think these liberals should go for broke and provide the free utopia to all who don't want to work or produce.

I have no idea why they are complaining they are only paying more of their fair share.

I kind of agree. Let California go totally socialist- your paycheck goes to the state, and they send you what THEY think you need to live and keep working. In fact, they should subtract what THEY think you should spend on health care, insurance, and other mandated stuff. Everything else is split up into electronic shoeboxes, from which you can only buy as much as they say and only where they say you can buy it. Lets get this over with

Of course it's about the money. Speed limits in many (if not most) are ridiculously low given the capability of today's cars. If the police really want to slow people down, they get out in the open (as in some construction zones). If they are out to collect revenue, they hide in the bushes in one of those obscenely low speed trap zones. Not that I'm bitter ...

I found it interesting that just looking at the overall view screams "money scam" and "looting". It is a way for CA to afford to be the socialist state it is. Problem is they break the money sources, like the guy who lost everything and became homeless for a damn ticket. Since you can't afford a lawyer, and ACLU only wants minorities, unless you are black (which that guy was), you are toast. The black guy should go screaming to the ACLU about it.

What do you think about stoplight cameras?

Never been tagged by one, so no direct experience. I do have two thoughts:

If they are used primarily for revenue collection vs law enforcement (which seems to be the case, oftentimes) it is basically dishonest. If you're gonna tax me, at least be honest about it.

Seems like they could easily be converted (if they are not already) into surveillance and tracking cameras, to monitor the activity of objectivists and other subversives ;-) Remember, it's not paranoia if they really are out to get you!

(just kidding on that second point ... or AM I?)

There needs to be a general law limiting the amount of revenue that ANY unit of government can collect from fines to, say, 10% of its revenue. If it's more than that, that city or state has become predatory and an enemy of its people.

In my city the biggest abuse is parking tickets downtown. The city has marked whole neighborhoods where people work during the day as 2 hour zones, so we have to move our cars 3 times daily. This is supposedly to benefit the environment. MY ASS IT IS!

3 times the pollution running engines at their worst, really friendly....I agree with you statement about the limits, but that is like telling the kids they can have ONE cookie. Hard to slap the hand of the looters

I've been tagged by a couple, and I was not a happy person when I got the bills in the mail. One of them was when I was following my real estate agent and she ran a yellow so I hurried along and did, too--I got tagged but she didn't. Gah! I agree with you on both points (but make that to monitor anyone they feel like). The rationale was to improve safety, but evidence didn't prove their point. In fact, when one went off at night, the camera blinded everyone driving with a huge flash. It is all about revenue. State legislation to get them banned passed the senate but then died.

Not according to two sources. The movies and DOHS plans to link up with all street cameras everywhere. Goes with the cell radio telephone tapping etc. etc. etc.

IF and it's a stretch they are protecting us from Terrorists and not just the government from it's citizens why not just arrest themselves?

Its private companies that install and maintain them in exchange for a 'cut' of the profits (fines). There is something wrong about all that I think. In fact, the fines shouldnt be assessed and collected for the benefit of the same people. The local and state cops give the tickets, the courts enforce them, and the money goes to the government. Thats just WRONG. If there is a fine, it should at least go to something like cancer research- not into the black hole of government

The NMA has studied these, and pretty much all of them are preying on safe drivers, and cause more accidents to boot.

Show me any intersection where there's a red-light camera that's making money, and I'll show you at least one of these facts:
      1) The yellow light is set too short, and increasing it by half a second will make so many of the violations go away that it won't pay to operate the camera any more;
      2) The camera operator has moved the vehicle-detector loop so that in at least some conditions, it is impossible to get the light to turn green without committing a violation; and/or
      3) Nearly all of the tickets are for right-on-red-without-quite-stopping, which is not an unsafe practice and should be legalized.

The accidents the cameras cause, of course, are people slamming on the brakes and getting rear-ended because of the short yellow.

The most cost efficient way a government can loot the public. It's a lot more expensive to have cops and they talk, cameras don't, and pictures can be edited. The premise of cameras is that they are untouched by anyone, and I, for one do not trust the government. Beaverton Oregon got caught in such a sting and it was shown the company had placed the camera angle so it showed you in a red light when it was still yellow. Cost them some big bucks.

Around about two turns of the century ago the Progressive (Bull Moose) Party platform contained something called Initiative, Referendum, and most importantly Recall. If Californians object they have recourse. Recall is an excellent way of punishing disloyal governments.

In California, the cost of gas, the taxes, the price of cars, and the chance of huge traffic fines leads to one thing:"Uber here we come!"

I hear a report that they were killing Uber off, by calling the drivers employees and not independent contractors. It was in the Ca Labor Board a few weeks ago, and there was a lot of screaming over it. Uber may not be long for the California Empire..

This is one of many reasons I left California for GOOD about 15 years ago. I get what they are trying to do, and its just too much to deal with. Nevada isnt nearly as predatory (yet), and if it gets there, I will look to move somewhere else.
