Absolutely fantastico !!! Does he play professionally? When did he start? Was it his dream or someone else's? Was he moved into classical or is that where he started? These are the things that come to mind for me when I hear someone as talented as your son, and I always want to know more.

My reason; as I was reaching age 70 I got a hunger to play the piano. My wife went to the east coast to visit her sister a few years ago. While she was gone I got a little bored and one day went out and bought a new petite baby grand piano, delivered the very next day. When she got home two weeks later there it was sitting a corner of our living room. I worked so hard learning to play something before she returned home. I managed to learn to play, in my own rhythm and beat, “Fur Elise”. I was so proud of myself, but I only got a, “That’s nice, honey” from her when I got home, I was so disappointed. Now she usually goes to the bedroom and closes the door when I play, even though I know I’ve come a long way and can play by memory at least a dozen classicals and a few others. I practice every day, well almost, and sometimes even twice a day, usually when something rings a bell in my head. I know most of the scales and still hate practicing them. It’s a struggle sometimes but it’s still a passion I just can’t let go of.

I started to teach myself, then even hired a teacher that came once a week for about two months. He was good but insisted I count out loud which I profusely refused to do. I told him I can count to myself. Since we argued so much just about counting I finally just fired him. We were both hung up on our methods. Since then I've been self-taught and I learn and play what I want, mostly classical. I'll never be as good as your son, I have no natural talent for it. I'll only be as good as I need to be for my personal enjoyment. It takes a commitment to play like your son and music can be such a joy and even a companion throughout your life. Don’t ever let him give it up, and if he ever tries to, have him give me a call first.

You have my admiration. Teaching yourself any instrument (I've tried) is no easy task.

And it's a lot more difficult when one has no natural talent (like me) for that kind of thing. That's what's "unfair" in this life. If only Congress could pass a law that says anyone can have talent, that would be a great political contribution to mankind.

My son initially taught himself using facebook and his younger sisters abandoned electric guitar. Seeing a natural talent we signed him up for lessons with an exceptional guitarist in Phoenix named Tom Mein. He took lessons for a year, graduated HS and enrolled in college to study music. In college he signed up for guitar ensemble and has been with it for 5 semesters while learning theory.

I am exceedingly proud of him. That said, I will forever push/prod him to live life fully and strive to achieve his more. Sadly, its a rough fight thanks to years of public education and an apathetic society which teaches its okay to be just okay.

Very refreshing to have an acoustic guitar being played as it was meant to be played. When Les Paul invented the electric guitar, I think it should have been called something other than a guitar. Perhaps an Amptar. What we have heard young Ashinoff play was THE guitar. There is a whole world of classical guitar pieces composed that are rarely heard today. Most of them, like the Allegro are very beautiful. The classical guitar is as expressive as any instrument you can name.I hope, that Joshua is on track to explore some of these neglected works.

I hear classical guitar all day, everyday..:)

Yes, it appears to be his passion and he is committed to continuing on with it.

Joshua also is a composer of classical guitar music, blues guitar music, and some pretty catchy and melodic rock music. I can see classical influence in what he does on electric as his classical prowess develops. Its exciting to watch (listen) and see where he will take his skills.

I've asked repeatedly for him to learn Eruption by Eddie van Halen as my 49th Birthday present this year. It doubtful that he will since I want him to really get into it and melt faces. :)

Wonderful tone! You can tell when a musician connects with his music, there is a sincerity to the presentation. You have to be very proud of him.

Quite nice. I could not tell it was not a pro. (I am not a musician nor a guitarist, but I listen to classical music all the time.)

Please pass regards and congrads on to Joshua.

    Hello AJAshinoff,
Very nice. Excellent performance. Keep up the encouragement and praise. He will go far. I could listen to him play all day. You hear it all day! Lucky you! It is wonderful to hear anyone play once they get some skills. When just beginning any instrument the sound can be quite discouraging. One must persevere. It is true what they say; "Practice makes perfect."

I have an Ibanez classical guitar that looks just like the one he is playing. The tone is so sweet. I feel bad that I don't play it as often as I should.
    Regards,
    O.A.
