Yeon Mi is a 20 year old defector from North Korea who escaped under harrowing conditions. In poverty and helping to support her mother and younger sister, she somehow manages to break into South Korean television and stars on a program that even with its entertainment venue, tells the truth about North Korea. There are times when I do not feel like I own myself in the good ole' USA.
That would include annually jumping through hoops to please the IRS and Alabama's income tax control freaks.
I also recall how I felt when I saw excited Democrats shaking hands and swarming like vermin on TV when they crammed the so-called "Affordable" Health Care Act down the throats of a majority who did not want it.
My personal biggie came in 1969 when I received a letter supposedly from Richard Nixon that included a photo of him smiling.
The letter began: "Congratulations, you have been inducted into the Armed Services."
If you want to know what Parris Island in 1969 was like, just watch the first half of Full Metal Jacket. It's accuracy is awesome.
I did not feel like I owned myself until two years later.

The longer of the two videos, in which she is interviewed, is extraordinary. And heartbreaking. I had to stop watching for a while to compose myself.

I look around me, and I see people who live well, for the most part. They aren't fearful that their government is out to do them harm, (for the most part), and I think we have no idea what REAL deprivation would be like. I didn't grow up in luxury, but I knew I would have my bed to sleep in, food to eat, and a roof over my head. What this young woman and her family endured makes the blood run cold. I'm very happy for them that they are together, and have a good life now.

Koreans make the very best drama shows. You can watch them on netflix and hulu. My friends an relarives snicker a bit to see an old crud 57 year old evil white guy like me watch such, but the thing I enjoy most about them is that they are always about the individuals "internal struggle" it is a perspective that one doesnt really see in dramas from other countries. The challenge in getting people to take them seriously is that they are almost always about "girl getting boy". However this emphasis on internal, struggle coupled with the apparent desire on the part of Koreans to be like americans...would make for an excellent Atlas Shrugged
