World War II Stories

I have a customer who served in World War II. I asked him once if he was ever scared. He told me that he and another soldier were caught behind enemy lines once during the campaign in Belgium. They were separated from their units and surrounded by Germans. The Belgium people were so happy they were being liberated that they hid them in basements, attacks and barns for days. I said it must have been terrifying. He laughed and said that while the Belgiums were kind enough to give what food they could spare they also gave what alcohol they could spare. Ultimately Mr. Simms made it back to his unit. He laughed and said when he went to talk to the soldier he had been hiding with the first words he said were "hey, you are black". The first thing he said was "damn, you are white". He said I guess fighting for your life is the best way to eliminate racism.. I hope stories like these are told and recorded before it is too late.

Yes. Thankfully racism now is on its way out, and we don't have to risk our lives.

The story reminded me about Chuck Yeager being shot down behind enemy lines. His friends asked him if he was scared. He lied and said the French Resistance hid him in a brothel, and he spent the entire time with pretty French women.

I agree with preserving their stories. They're called the Greatest Generation for good reason.
