    If you were looking at setting up a church as a way to avoid paying taxes, I can see the licensing arguments from the city viewpoint. You should be free to meet with whomever you want but as soon as you start claiming the non-taxing of churches exceptions, then you have to play by their rules. There is nothing mentioned in this story about if the group was claiming church exemptions but it looks like they had already obtained this.

    An easy way to solve all of this is to get rid of the church-exempt tax status for all churches. Then you can sit there and prostrate to your imaginary friend all you want with no government support.
