My parents get calls all the time trying to convince they need certain medical supplies that medicare will cover "you can get more test strips" and the like, but one day a month or so ago my Mom got a phone call from someone who rattle off a couple of things my parents were "eligible to receive" my mom kept saying "No, we don't need any of that." And THEN the lady tried to convince my 77 year old mother to get a penis pump for my 79 old dad... My Mom said, "A WHAT?!" and hung up on her. My Dad's response when he heard this... "What is the world coming to??" My mom's reply, "The end!"
They harass old people to cash in on their benefits...it's disgusting!! Don't get me started on hearing aide businesses and the racket going on within those places.... sickening!

This is why I dearly love my Caller ID. Old dino often lets that phone ring.
Toll Free Call, Unknown Caller, some city in some state and weird strings of numbers can all go to ding-a-ling for all care.
Should my phone ring like 3 times and cut off, I know the caller used a multiple call system and the first pick-up gets to listen to a pitch or a donation plea.
I learned about multiple calls from a guy who said his wife used to do that.

When pondering the reasons for bad medical advice given to diabetics (eat plenty of carbs and just take more meds to compensate), don't cross OUTRIGHT FRAUD off your list. There is a lot of money involved in keeping people sick.

"The daily carb intake for male diabetics recommended by the American Diabetes Association varies between 135 and 180 grams for your three basic meals along with up to 60 to 90 grams of extra carbohydrates at snack time. Your daily recommended carb intake could therefore vary between 135 grams a day if you don't snack up to 270 grams a day."

Advice like this has been typical for decades. 270g of carbohydrates is the same as eating over 1-1/4 cups of sugar per day. Whole grains, strongly recommended by the ADA, has an even higher glycemic index than sugar.

I was well on my way to full-blown type 2 diabetes before I went low carb. Now I average 40g of carbs PER DAY. I also went from having blood pressure of 149/95 down to 115/69 the last time I took it.

The recommendations ARE changing, but slowly.

And here is the website for the ADA telling people they don't have to miss out on sugar!

40g of carbohydrates? This is 160 calories from carbs. You must be essentially be on the Atkins diet.

BTW, the linked article says Type 2 is closely linked to obesity, which it is. Their point is you can eat sugar, but you need to control your weight. It does not say anything irresponsible.

My spouse that is type 1 diabetic, who works out rigorously 6 days a week, eats nothing, has a GLH # ~5, and can't lose weight. This and other data makes me view type 2 diabetes as self-inflicted issue. 90% of these people 1) can control it with diet, but often lack the discipline...leading to ..., 2) never had to have it in the first place. Thyroid problems aside, there is little more indicative of our country's problems than hugely overweight people with electric wheelchairs and disabled parking stickers.

Separately, these health care predators are disgusting vultures preying on the elderly and ignorant!

Dodd-Frank, the gift that keeps on taking, was a political response to things like this and look how well that is working out...people need to be aware that evil exists, and use their instincts when dealing with these types. Old people now are well-educated and have the smarts to sense when they might be getting taken.

The scam work like this: first apply and get approved as an approved Medicare supplier of medical devices, beds, motorized wheelchairs, lift chairs, and so on. Then overcharge. Usually asking Medicare recipient for partial payment upfront with balance picked up by social security. The initial payment by recipient is typically what the device can be purchased for on the open market, or what supplier actually has invested in it plus normal markup. The rest from social security is all scam gravy.
For example, my friend’s mother ordered a bed this way, and I found the exact bed easily available on the internet for exactly her upfront co-pay ($120). The other $350 was paid to supplier by SS.

Reminds me of and old burlesque routine. (Result of a misspent youth) It was called "Dr. Kronkite."
Doctor: Are you a blood donor?
Patient: At my age, I'm not even a blood owner.
(A "Kronkite" is a Yiddish term for a habitually sick person.)
