I didn't know you could caary proof on your gadget. And trying to piss off a cop is just not cost effective. That seems to be a the root of a lot of the issues you see. I prefer to leave them alone.

The phone is better proof of insurance than the card. For example, I was hit once by an uninsured driver who had an insurance card that showed she was insured for a 6 month period. It turns out she hadn't paid her premium in months so really her insurance had lapsed but the cop accepted the card anyway. Of course I very quickly found out she didn't have insurance and she ended up getting her license suspended and later revoked for not paying the fines. At least with the phone usually you have to sign into your account real time. If you didn't pay and the policy is inactive it will not display the card info. Also, anyone can make a fake insurance card.

While there are lots of things that you can do legally (evidently having your proof of insurance on your phone is now one of them), why would one want to do things that intentionally antagonize the cops? If you're going to do something different, then you're going to have to explain that and likely have something that says that you are right. Should that be necessary? No, clearly. But do you want to cause a cop to question your validity? The courts have given the cops wide latitude in evaluating threats and probable cause. They need to as there are infinite scenarios and cops need to make evaluations in split seconds. Why cause them to evaluate something outside the norm?
