Delta to try new seating

More power to them, but I'd hate to be part of the IT team tasked with making this happen. They should be able to get their own website to work fine, but what about their connection to SABRE?

Would you rather see a plane divided up into multiple sections, or does the standard coach vs business work for you?

First thing the airlines need to do to improve their profitability is to kick all federal employees out of all the airports. I'd rather drive coast to coast for 3 days at higher cost than put up with the assholes that work for Fatherland Security. If they can't be fired, then put them all on the US/Mexico border facing south with orders to stop anyone without a US passport.

Delta has done little right in 25 years, and this is no improvement.
Airlines have been giving a deal to larger passengers for years at the expense of smaller passengers. Someone who is 90 lb should get a discount compared to someone who is 300 lb. If you want more legroom, pay for it. If you weigh under 100 lb, you should be able to have a free 50 lb carry-on and extra weight in checked bags, while the 200 lb passenger should have to pay for both.

The whole thing depends on what you value most vs the available options. What will likely happen is this will justify higher prices for, frankly, paltry increases in services/amenities. It is the ole, putting products on sale for 15% off when you just raised the price 20%. You have to think, which is hard for most people today.

I fly a lot, I have also been flying long enough to remember a time ( not that long ago ) when flying was enjoyable. Used to be that I would pay extra to get a seat on a Midwest Express flight, because I didn't have to worry about if it was going to be a comfortable flight or not. It always was. After that stopped being a choice I still had a pretty good relationship with AirTran, if I was flying out of Milwaukee I reached a point where I could count on an instant upgrade to business class.. Then they got bought out by SouthWorst.. These days, I hate flying.. Ok, not that I hate flight .. I just hate the current crop of cattle cars with wings..

What will be interesting to watch will be whether they are willing to let seats in the higher cost area go unfilled or will they end up selling them at lower cost just to fill them? I suspect they will do the latter, which will put people in higher service areas at lower costs (often) than those in lower service areas.

The incremental cost per passenger is virtually zero (if the complementary food/beverages are fully stocked and have to be thrown out if not consumed). Thus, selling a seat, at any cost, is incremental revenue. The plane needs some minimum number of passengers to cover the costs, but after that, it is pure profit. Those last seats that are in higher service areas but aren't sold will be sold at whatever price it takes to fill them.

Either one works for me. I'm 5'7", so I don't care about legroom. I do like having a little alcove with a desk and ability to lie down on long flights, but it's generally not worth as much as they charge. Coach isn't that bad.

You're lucky. I'm 6'4", and travelling for me means bulkhead seating (and no carry-on space) or misery. Getting an aisle seat is almost the worst (ever had your knees get hit by one of those refreshment carts? OUCH!).
