Why Rand Still Matters

"Yet, as I have mentioned people hated Ayn Rand(and still do), for the exact reasons that she fought against throughout her career as a novelist/philosopher: the lack of confidence to understand that love for the self is far more necessary for healthy relationships with others, and a healthy position in a society than anything else."

Yet we live in a society of self hate with people mating and joining communities with equal self hate. And then turn that hatred outward in envy of others that are happy and healthy.

And the carbon copy socialist lockstep self-haters look down upon individuals who value the uniqueness of their selves as so many antiquated dinosaurs of some quaint bygone day.
      Well, I should know.

Without the dignity of having earned one's own place in life, one will always be dependent on the Ellsworth Tooheys and the Mr. Thompsons of the world.

Great summary of her life and work! I think one of the problems with society today is that it has embraced a faux individuality. For instance the recent "Army of One" campaign and the pop culture forces saying it's ok to "be yourself". So, young people especially, think they are being individuals, while being part of the herd. True individualism, in which self and it's achievements as the primary measure of self worth, is not encouraged.

      Hi G,
I think that awareness of being an individual is a "default" starting position of children and adolescents. Then in takes parenting and education to reach some intellectual level of self-understanding and an elemental "philosophy" of life. With half the families broken and the education in the firm grasp of socialist and authoritarian minded organizations, what results can one expect? I remember that at the time of Bill Clinton's affair with the intern, the leading "journalists" (they do not deserve the name; propaganda apparatchiks fits them much better) were trying to convince us that "character does not matter in elected politicians". Can you name one kind of human to human relationship where character truly does not matter? In my opinion, a truly developed, mature character and high cognitive ability are the most admirable features of any human being. When I meet one such, I almost instantly know that I face an original and irreproducible individual. No hope for ever in the past or in the future finding a indistinguishable clone. Only in science fiction. Is there a better definition of an individual?
