Putting aside any 'rightness or wrongness' on the grand jury's decision, I've seen this play out a dozen or so times starting with the Watts Riots of the mid-60's. The goals of the rioters are simple destruction, and that's destruction of what they don't own since they really don't own anything - their housing, appliances, food, day care, on and on are paid for and provided to them by the rest of us. Why should they take care of somebody else's things?

What amazes me is that we (the public in general) fall for the nonsense that riots like this are based on anything other than opportunity or that there exists causes and reasons for such actions that we could better handle. If a significant portion of any population has a general relationship with the government of 'Daddy/Mommy' and don't have a need that drives them to emotionally mature, they're are going to take every opportunity to throw a 'hissy' and challenge 'Daddy/Mommy' just like an immature child. Treat them like a spoiled child, they'll react like a spoiled child (brat).

As well, there exist thousands in and out of government that make their living and career purpose of being that part of the population's 'Daddy/Mommy' (Jackson, Obama, Sharpton, the media press, etc) and need to maintain, even increase, the public's viewpoint that they are needed. Every reason to see the riot, no reason to help prevent it.

How can Objectivist not see the reality of this type of nonsense?

Very good observations, Zen. I saw a lot of people engaging in opportunistic criminal theft and destruction on various broadcasts. The motivations were likely many, but you're right about not all 'leaders' calling a crime a crime.

I've finally found the essay, "Tribesman, Barbarian and Citizen" by John W. Campbell, the Godfather of science fiction, who was the guiding light of the golden age of science fiction.
      http://forums.theonering.com/viewtopic.p...

He's also the author of the essay I like to share called, "Hyperdemocracy".

Unfortunately, I can't find the sequel to "Tribesman, Barbarian, Citizen", called, "The Barbarians Among Us". In the latter essay, he points out how, in the Watts riots, most of the looters were white. He cites how one of the rioters proclaimed, "They're killing us!". He then points out that the rioter is NOT referring to blacks as a race, but barbarians as a cultural group.

I remember reading every word of Campbell's editorials when Analog came each month. There were times that I disagreed with what he said, but many more times that what he wrote made me think about ideas that school never touched on.

Thanks for the link. And for the interesting perspective that we are dealing with a class of Barbarians that has precipitated out of our culture to form a sediment...and drift to the bottom.

Basically the riot was going to happen no matter what.

If the Grand Jury did Indict it would be a "Yay the cop got indicted riot"

Since the Grand Jury did not indict now its a "Boo the cop didn't get indicted riot"

Either way there is a riot and the eaters loot and burn.

It's heartbreaking to see this happen in America. Who are the leaders in the African American community? Why didn't Obama, Sharpton and Jackson announce that violence would not be tolerated? I keep thinking of all the work my family has done building our business and it could be gone in the blink of an eye if thugs like this decide to riot. The town of Ferguson probably won't survive this.

Are you kidding? Obama and Sharpton did everything they could to make sure this would happen.
Sharpton didn’t have to plan a multiple-city protest and give cover for the looters. He met with Obama last week. They are agitators.
I disagree with some of the reports that the mayor should have announced earlier in the day. By waiting til 8:00 PM, people were allowed to get home from work. Because the schools were already closed, there were no extra-curriculum activities caught off guard. This could have been a lot worse. Daylight wouldn’t have made a difference; daylight would have increased the presence of youth. Let’s hope the agitators go home now. It’s time for family and holidays.
This didn’t have to happen. The police really mishandled the crime-scene. They should have stayed with the Dad, comforting him and walked the perimeter talking with bystanders ended the rumors on the spot. They should have been more respectful with the body. So, yeah, in a way, there is a communication problem between the police and the community that needs to be reviewed and dealt with.

I agree, Mimi. Very good point about the mishandling immediately following the shooting. I'm not convinced how much difference handling the scene and the family perfectly would've done, though. Too many outside influences came flocking in to make sure that things got out of hand. Very frustrating situation.

        More respectful with the body...

You ever try moving 300lbs of dead weight?

        FREE WILLIE!

(yes, extremely disrespectful... thuggish bullies deserve disrespect).

let's start with the failed premise of "african american community" as long as we need to have one of those, there will be race issues in our country
why didn't we see business owners armed to the teeth outside their business?

You are so right khalling. I am a 12% minority (white) living in the Dominican Republic for 6 years. The Dominicans think the term African American is repugnant and don't understand why the blacks in America want to use the term. My wife and I are the only whites living on a street of 22 homes. The Dominicans would do anything to help us if needed and are wonderful friends. As we go to stores almost everyone greets you, if you make eye contact, with "buena" or "salud". and a big smile. They also get to laugh when we refer to ourselves as "Gringos" . The only racial tension is the Dominicans do not care for the Haitians as they invaded this country 19 times. Lastly, I am German and know where Germany is on a map, but am not a German American, but an American with a German heritage. So, "african american community" is a failed premise.

Its because they wanted something like this to happen, because it makes America as a whole seem divided. When there's chaos, who steps in? People who can "guarantee" something. Whether it be "equality" or "safety" or "freedom"... What party likes to position themselves as champions of all the above?

Even though we're not actually divided, this event makes it seem that way to the people who vote for the people you mentioned, Rich; and if the people you mentioned are like the political opportunists of the past...(we know who I'm speaking about) Then this is literally an early Christmas for them... You're right about Ferguson. It'll never be the same town it was even two days ago.

At least the Grand Jury got it right and didn't cave to the pressure. I am wondering what happens next. Trayvon Martin was a thug and so was Michael Brown. I am guessing these are warm ups and if an innocent black man is killed by Police all hell will break loose.

There's another black man who was killed by a white officer in Milwaukee, way back in April. This happened to be a cop who was called to handle a mentally disturbed person. The cop tried to do a pat-down (saw bulges in the guy's pockets), and the guy grabbed his baton and started waling on the cop. The cop then took out his gun and fired, killing the guy. The police chief fired the cop, not for the killing - everyone agrees that was justified - but for conducting the pat-down in the first place. The coward DA is still stalling on whether the cop will be charged, even though the police chief has already said his actions were justified. My guess is this will happen soon, and be used by the antagonists to rally more riots in MKE.

I think this is all being done to foment more race based hatred and anger so that we can have another summer of rioting like in '69. That will be used as a reason to implement martial law.

I agree that the "leaders" wanted this to happen. I've been saying for some time that the division of race has become a big business. If it looks like we are all getting along then no one makes any money. This is the same concept as climate change. It's not science, it's a business that reaches religious/cult proportions.

America is divided. It is not evenly divided, and it is not along racial lines but along ideological lines. The mainstream media, even Fox, decry the inability of the government to "work together" to fix problems, but how can they when they are as opposite in their goals and views as black and white?

You have the collectivist slavers and their greedy moocher/looter adherents on the left, and you have the individualists and their productive conservatives on the right. Never the twain shall meet.

Many media outlets just wish to fan the flames. For sensational pictures and stories of mayhem they would endanger more people and property. The criminals creating the mayhem, burning, looting, destruction and violence don't give a hoot about Michael Brown. It is pure opportunism for them. Some wish to justify their actions regardless of facts... Physical evidence or any contrary eyewitness evidence to the preferred narrative be damned. Feelings reign supreme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M99nzyiS...
The innocent upstanding citizens of the area will only be hurt by the picture painted, as if the criminals are representative of an entire population. It is unfortunate because the violence perpetrated by some will only feed the stereotypes that are undeserved by most.

Was stuck waiting for a train in NY City for a couple of hours yesterday and the only news broadcast on was CNN. This issue was the only one covered waiting for the verdict. It was a feeding frenzy of race and gender race and gender race and gender over and over ad nauseum. It was all feelings devoid of rational thought. It seemed every 5 minutes the race and gender of the jury was flashed on the screen and discussed as though skin color and genital configuration was all that was needed to reach a conclusion. There was zero consideration as to whether or not the jury may have had any brains to sift through the facts and reach a rational decision or if they were dumb as a box of rocks. Now you know why I'd rather watch Fox News.

Great article. I went on a Twitter rant last night on this about 5-6 tweets long. Went along the same lines as Francisco's speech before he announces his crash, ironically enough:
"The moment people start making judgments based upon how they feel, rather than what they know, is the moment the U.S. as I've known it, dies. I see people using the words "I know in my heart" and "I feel like"... the only people who seem to have had the facts are those in that jury. My logic: If they had better access to facts than you, then you have no right to inflame the situation with gossip and speculation. #media."

I went on to say how despicable it was that they were taking it out on their own town and businesses that had served them so gladly. Basically, this would have never become the disaster it had had it not been for the media. Combine an inflammatory information source with enough fuel (dumb people, as per Mr. Gruber) and this is what you get.

Obama did exactly what I expected he would do, fall back to his Saul Alinksy "Rules for Radicals" training, never let a good crisis go to waste, set race against race. It sure got him off the hook for some of his recent bone-headed actions. He has never cared about blacks, was raised as a spoiled brat by white grandparents. Blacks are people he uses to advance an agenda, as the Alinsky training taught him. If there is leadership in the black community, they should be objecting to the way they are used and stepping up on a daily basis to reclaim their children from drugs and thruggery.

The powerful, the corrupt and criminals always turn on each other when there is no one else to loot. After they destroy the country they will destroy each other.

I lived through the Detroit riots. As a teen I was a soda-jerk at a drugstore on 12th street. Two blocks from where I worked was Rev. Franklin's church (Aretha's dad). 12th Street was destroyed. There is no more 12th street as it was then and likely will never be again.
