If only we had more funding! How long before we hear the cuts were the result of the previous administration.

    A cynical interpretation:
Disease reported in Africa. Influential crony buys patent on vaccine.
Gives big publicity to scare. Supports reducing entry controls.
The import of " ...Ebola patients to America: so they can be exploited for medical experiments, military bio-weapons harvesting or intellectual property claims."
Cases reported and public demands action.
Government places big order for vaccine.

No, lucky the cynic? Db will look at the patent more closely tomorrow. That 's a canadian patent btw not US. So the crony must have set up shop in an economically freer country- oh, Canada

Hey kh you are right, I even self-identify as a cynic. ..and. I am even cynical about cynics. eg that site has some stuff that is good and some that is not.
Look fwd to Db's comment on the patent. If I understand it I will post the comment and any hole in the case on the pricipiascientific site.
I get a lot of fun from reading about conspiracies, believing them is another matter.

The patent is a Canadian patent. The corresponding US case is still being argued in the Patent Office. At least one of the questions is whether it is patent eligible under 35 USC 101.

Of course any product related to this patent would have to go through FDA trials, which probably would take a decade and 100s of millions of dollars.

Both the FDA and the stupidity of the Supreme Court have resulted in a situation, where only the government will invest in vaccines and related technology. So it is not at all surprising to see that it was the CDC that owned this patent.

However, one can make an interesting V for Vendetta story out of it with a little imagination.

I think it's the white man's fault. You know, because no white people have died from it. Yet.
Because we all know disease knows what skin color looks like. Blah!!!!

Maybe, if scientists used private funding, and didn't rely on federal grant money, there would be freedom to really do some magnificent things. I can bet that there are venture capitalists out there who would and could work with researchers and scientists to really do something positive. But, that's a pipe dream. Sorry, I was having a fantasy there...

Market forces work wonders. When an incentive exists to produce we get progress. Government funding dries up if you succeed so the opposite occurs. I find it laughable that this guy would make such a bold statement.
