And the whole give and take implications. As if EVERYONE takes, so just make sure you give more than you take....um somebody's getting more than their giving then.. As a steadfast rule...I don't give OR take. I earn and trade value. It's plain "You are your brother's keeper" bullshit.

CircuitGuy - Personally, if the worst I had to deal with was an advertisement on a bag by a private corporation suggesting a voluntary philosophy, I would not mind. But it is like seeing Christian billboards saying "God Bless out Military"...it makes me feel as if the Christians are trying to talk 'for' me and represent the US as a Christian country. Similarly, this bag makes me feel as if the ad is posing as 'the speaker for the country' - and he definitely does not speak for me.

They're just using ideas I agree with to sell stuff.

Except for the last sentence, I strongly agree with the quote, at least for my interpretation of it and for my own life only.

        'Don't be a jerk.' I try not to be ill-tempered or mean-spirited.

'Try to love everyone.' By this I mean I try not to give into hate. I try to respect everyone's inherent worth.

'Give more than you take.' I try to create value in the world. I want clients to think they got a bargain. I want vendors to think I'm helpful, honest, and someone they want to work with. I want employees to think the same and that they learned something, were inspired, and/or just got great money for being smarter than I am at something or solving someone's problem better than I could. To give more than I take are words I try to live by.

That is putting a very individual positive spin on the message, CircuitGuy. I think that the writer would agree with you on the "Don't be a jerk." line, but probably not on the other two items: I think that what is intended by the message is that you should feel obliged to give people stuff that they have not earned and that you should tell them that because you love them all it is just fine.

I agree with creating and trading value (I love win-win interactions), but not in my needing to validate my own existence by supporting people who do not have a fair trade to give me something in return. I may still choose to give them a gift - but I should not be socially pressured into doing so by a paper bag.
