In Defense of the Unpatriotic

Golden geese can fly, and nothing scares Washington more. One reason people go into government is because they have little to offer in the private sector. Having to sell one’s self and one’s product or service, to pursue ambition and self-interest, in short, to compete, is distasteful and they abhor the idea of the government having to compete for talent, capital, and businesses (the c-words they like are command and control). Making conditions more amenable to the geese is not to be considered, or considered only as an absolute last resort, if nothing else keeps them in their coop. For now, lambast those who fly. If patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels, calling those fleeing a rapacious government “unpatriotic” is the next to last.

That's one of the great lies our second-hander masters tell themselves, isn't it? They awake at night in cold sweats after nightmares in which they have to acknowledge that there are individuals out their who are capable of accomplishing things they never could.

Not only capable, but proven. So then they have to apply negative morals to the accomplishments such as greed and selfishness to the motivations to 'do'. To 'do' things the second-handers can't even dream of.
